First Time In Prison

If this is your first time behind bars in the UK, you probably have a lot of questions about what life is like in jail and what you can anticipate.

I was afraid of what jail life would be like since I knew there would be a lot of people there who were nothing like me, hardened criminals who would eat me for breakfast if given the chance. After hearing the horror stories, I was dreading taking my first prison shower. Not only was I a picky eater, but I was terrified of what I might consume in prison. How would it feel to abandon my family and friends? How would they get by without me?

First Time In Prison

If this is your first time in prison, you will feel as if you are a fish out of water, as if you do not belong there. You must strive to get rid of this feeling as quickly as possible. I felt like I was better than most of the other people in there, but regardless of crime, we've all been through the ringer, wound up in the same location, and are all trying to get to the same spot, the conclusion of our terms.

There will be other people like you in there, and it won't take long for you to find your own crowd; you'll also notice that they scout you out. If you're headed to prison for a white collar crime, there appears to be an unofficial white collar club inside that you'll be promptly accepted into.

First-time inmates normally go to the prison's induction wing, which is very dismal but you'll be soon moved on, keep in mind that because it's an induction wing, everyone else on that wing is also new. It allows you to settle in, find your feet, become accustomed to doing nothing, and take in your new surroundings. It can be noisy, stinky, and unpleasant. Because it takes a while to get your money in, you have very little phone credit, so your hands are suddenly tied.

Patience is essential; you're not going anywhere fast, so just expect the first couple of weeks to be uncomfortable and bothersome, but know that after the induction wing, you'll be moved to a more permanent cell with a more compatible cell mate.
