Can I Send a Prisoner Money: Guidelines and Procedures

Prison Info

Have you ever wondered if you could send a prisoner money in the UK? If yes, then you’re at the right place. Let’s go through this together!

Sending money to a loved one in prison can be a lifeline for them, helping cover essentials like toiletries and clothing, additional food, and phone calls. UK prisons allow inmates to receive money from outside though there are specific guidelines and procedures to be followed.

Direct Transfer

The easiest way to send money to a prisoner is through a Bank Transfer. Inmates have an account within the prison system where your money can be deposited. Note, however, that this could take between 1 to 3 working days to process.

Online

Another more convenient way to transfer money to a prisoner is through the online payments portal. Here, you can use a debit card to make the payment. This service is available 24/7 and the funds usually reach the prisoner’s account within one working day.

Please remember to always have the prisoner’s number and the date of birth at hand when you are carrying out the payment, this ensures the payment goes to the correct person.

Postal Order

If you’re unable to do a bank or online transfer, you can also send a Postal Order, though this method is slower. Send via Recorded or Special Delivery to ensure it reaches the prison safely.

Restrictions

  • No cash or cheques are allowed.
  • There may be limits on the amount of money that a prisoner can receive.
  • Money can only be sent to convicted prisoners – not remand prisoners.

Consequences

If a prisoner is found to be in possession of too much money, the excess may be confiscated and, if not legal, may result in disciplinary action. Similarly, if you’re found attempting to smuggle money to a prisoner, you might face penalties.

Returning Money to a Sender

If for any reason the money can’t be accepted, the prison will return the money to the sender. The sender should include their name and address on the back of the Postal Order form.

Withdrawals

Prisoners can make withdrawals from their personal accounts, though this money may be subject to checks and may only be used for approved purposes.

Sending Money Abroad

If your loved one is detained in a foreign prison, the UK Government does not allow money to be sent directly to the prisoner. In this case, the embassy of that country can provide you with further assistance.

In summary, sending money to a prisoner in the UK is allowed but must be done following the correct channels. Remember to always check with individual prisons for any specific rules or regulations they may have in place.
